Senator McCain Tells Ukrainians of Nobel Nomination for Yushchenko

Georgian President Saakashvili also nominated; both cited as "representing exactly" the Nobel Prize ideal.

Washington, D.C., February 4, 2005 – Senator John McCain, in an exclusive interview with the Voice of America (VOA), discussed his nomination of Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko and Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili for the Nobel Peace Prize. Senator McCain, a Republican from Arizona, and Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton, a Democrat from New York, sent a joint letter to the Nobel Institute nominating the two presidents last week.

In a TV interview with VOA’s Ukrainian Service, Senator McCain said, "We think that both presidents represent the very finest courage, dedication, and leadership, which brings about freedom and democracy. We think that these two individuals represent exactly what Mr. Nobel had in mind when he started this prize many years ago."

Senator McCain said that he has no doubt that the United States will provide assistance to Ukraine in the future and that the country’s Orange Revolution has been an inspiration to people around the world.

McCain is scheduled to travel to Ukraine along with Senator Clinton and Senator Joseph Lieberman, a Democrat from Connecticut, on February 11.
