VOA's "Africa Music Man," Leo Sarkisian, was virtually hired by Edward R. Murrow himself! During Murrow's 1961 trip to Conakry, he approached Sarkisian about joining VOA. A few years later, Sarkisian did just that, and his contributions to VOA are invaluable.
