Bill Baum was appointed Senior Advisor to the VOA Director in June 2016 and works on various projects for VOA. Prior to that, he was VOA’s East Asia and Pacific Division Director since October 2010, where he oversaw ten language services with operations in seven countries, producing multi-media news, information and language learning programs. He also served as Chief of the Chinese Branch for ten years, where he oversaw expansion of the Mandarin Service’s live television programming to seven days a week, launched the Cantonese Service’s first television program for distribution in Hong Kong and expanded English-learning programs. Baum previously served as Operations Manager and National News Director for the Taipei International Community Cultural Foundation in Taiwan, a commercially-run duopoly. In addition, he served as Asian News Director and Assignments Editor for Metro Broadcast Corporation’s 24-hour all-news channel in Hong Kong, launched in 1991 and as City Editor for the China News in Taipei, Taiwan, where he conducted investigative reporting of Taiwan’s Ministry of Defense, constitutional reform and many other issues. Baum received his Master of Arts degree from National Cheng Chi University in Taiwan and a Bachelor of Arts from Washington and Lee University.
