Barry Newhouse is the Acting Director of VOA’s News Center. Prior to this appointment, Newhouse served as Acting Managing Editor of the News Center, which is responsible for day-to-day operations as well as foreign and domestic news coverage. Before returning to the Washington newsroom as a senior news editor in 2016, he was the Asia Coverage Editor based in VOA’s Bangkok bureau for five years, overseeing reporters from Japan to Afghanistan. Previously he was VOA’s Pakistan and Afghanistan Bureau Chief (2007-2009). He also has reported for VOA from Iraq, Turkey, Haiti, Thailand, China, Hong Kong and South Korea. Newhouse holds a master's degree in journalism from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a bachelor’s degree in religion from Davidson College.
