On February 26, VOA Learning English will feature winning entries from its writing contest, “Teach Us about Ukraine,” on its website, podcast, and social media platforms. VOA Learning English engages English learners around the world through lessons and content that speak to audience interest, with a range of proficiency from beginner to intermediate and advanced levels.
“We were impressed with the wide range of experiences recounted by these teachers,” said VOA Learning English Chief Hai Do. “Their stories reveal the beauty of Ukraine and the determination of the people to preserve their culture and heritage.”
For the contest – which is jointly sponsored by GoGlobal, a nongovernmental organization dedicated to the study of English in Ukraine, and which ran from September to November 2023 – Ukrainian teachers of English submitted essays about life, culture and history of Ukraine, as well as how the country and its people have adjusted to life since Russia’s invasion in February 2022.
VOA teachers and editors selected 22 entries out of nearly 100 submissions, working with Ukrainian teachers to develop lesson plans from the winning entries. These essays and lessons will be a valuable resource, not only for Ukrainian students, but also for individuals around the world with an interest in learning more about Ukraine while also learning the English language.
