Today the National Press Club awarded Voice of America with the 2024 Arthur Rowse Award for Examining the News Media for its original coverage on press freedom.
This year’s winning story, “Last of the Watchdogs,” is VOA Press Freedom journalist Liam Scott’s first major assignment at the network. Working in collaboration with VOA Press Freedom editor Jessica Jerreat and video journalist Saqib Ul Islam -- and featuring artwork by Oleksandr Danylenko and assistance from VOA Washington editor Aru Pande and VOA editors Holly Franko, Pete Cobus and Meryl Page – Scott depicts how a police raid on a small-town Kansas newspaper in August 2023 underscores the need to protect and support local journalism.
This is the VOA’s second time winning this award after first earning it for their 2021 coverage of former USAGM CEO Michael Pack’s time at the agency.
The National Press Club will present the award to VOA during a formal ceremony in Washington, D.C., on August 28.
