Washington D.C., December 18, 2008 – The Voice of America (VOA) was named a Business in Education partner with Mary Ellen Henderson Middle School (MEHMS) in nearby Falls Church, Virginia for providing students an opportunity to learn about U.S. international broadcasting.
More than a dozen 7th graders conducted interviews at VOA and learned about broadcast production as part of a Career Spotlight segment for the group's daily television broadcast at the school.
"The Falls Church City Public School system is pleased to have this opportunity for our 7th grade TV crew to learn about the global broadcast world," said Jeanne Seabridge, MEHMS Career Technology Teacher. "Our students had the opportunity to observe, interview, and record television professionals from many occupations and different cultures."
Students asked VOA staff about careers in broadcasting, job responsibilities and technical qualifications.
The Business in Education (BIE) Partnership connects Falls Church City Public Schools and local businesses. Partners share their knowledge and talents with students and schools by providing real-world learning experiences and preparing students for the workforce through career education.
The Voice of America, which first went on the air in 1942, is a multimedia international broadcasting service funded by the U.S. government through the Broadcasting Board of Governors. VOA broadcasts approximately 1,500 hours of news, information, educational, and cultural programming every week to an estimated worldwide audience of more than 134 million people. Programs are produced in 45 languages.
